The
second icon to have had a massive influence on the world of art direction is
French graphic designer Jean Paul Goude. He revolutionized art design from the
past 30 years. He began
as an illustrator; he created drawings for famous French department store
‘Printemps’ he then sent his illustrations to Harold Hayes at Esquire who then
invited him to New York to create illustrations for the publication. (1) His
drawings skirted the edge of surrealism. (2)
In 1968
Hayes asked Jean Paul Goude to art direct a special edition of the magazine to
celebrate its 75th issue, several months later and Goude was asked
to become full time art director at the magazine. Although having limited
experience in layouts, Goude stayed at Esquire for seven years. (3)
Goude’s
most famous works mostly included his long term muse and love interest of the
time Grace Jones. He
consulted on her image, choreographed her live stage performances, directed her
music videos, and created her album covers.(4) The two met during New York’s disco
scene, stating in a 2009 interview "In 1977 or ’78, I met Grace and it was
a period of decadence. People were still doing lots of drugs and I had been
working so hard for so long and she made me part of her lifestyle, made me go
out dancing at Studio 54.
She became an obsession and we did everything together." (5)
From
Esquire he moved to work with Azzedine Alaia in the ‘80s, by the 90’s he was creating prolific adverts
for Chanel and their fragrances.
Goude
consistently defied expectations and found ways to critique society from within
an industry that manufactures standards of taste and beauty. His love for
“atypical” beauties and his technique of cutting up, elongating, and otherwise
manipulating images of his best-known muse, Grace Jones, and other subjects,
like model Farida Khelfa and bodybuilder Kellie Everts set him apart from his
contemporaries. (6)
